Students can choose from either public or private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius. The public institutions are as follows:

The private institutions are mostly local counterparts of overseas universities/awarding bodies and offer programmes on full time or part time basis as well as through a mixed-mode system, including both distance learning and face-to face tutorials. The examinations are, in general, conducted by the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES), apart from a few which are organised and invigilated by overseas institutions themselves in collaboration with the local partner. You will need to provide translations of your documents, if they are not already in English or French. Only a translation by an official translator and certified by an attorney is acceptable

The Government of the Republic of Mauritius currently offers scholarships to deserving students who are resident citizens of member states of the African Union or of African Commonwealth countries. These scholarships are for full-time, on-campus undergraduate (diploma/degree) and postgraduate programmes tenable in public Higher Education Institutions in Mauritius. The undergraduate programmes should be of maximum duration of four years full time on-campus.

International students may also contact the Higher Education Institutions to enquire about any scheme they may be operating.

Tuition fees in Mauritius are much lower than in western countries and are very affordable. Students from SADC countries benefit further by paying the local fees.

Estimated cost of living (including accommodation, food and pocket money) - US $350 per month. For comparison, the minimum wage in Mauritius is Rs 10,500/ month (i.e about $ 325 - $ 350).

The respective institutions have a dedicated Desk Officer who assists international students in every step of their registration, i.e, from obtaining student visa, accommodation, opening of Bank Account, student pass for free transport etc.

The University in which you have enrolled will make the necessary arrangements with the Passport & Immigration Office (PIO) in Mauritius for entry visa and student visa for the duration of your studies.

Evidence of adequate funds to meet the costs of stay and studies may have to be produced along with other PIO requirements.

A test for HIV, Hepatitis B and a chest x-ray should be done at any private medical laboratory/clinic/hospital in Mauritius and the tests results and Chest x-ray report should be submitted to the Passport and Immigration Office not later than one month after arrival. Other tests may be as per PIO requirements.

If you intend to be accompanied by dependents, you should apply for visas for the dependents and each application will be considered by the Passport and Immigration Office, on a case to case basis.

There is a variety of apartments, guesthouses, bedrooms and houses available on rent to accommodate students. These come with different price ranges. You may obtain more information from the institution where you intend to enroll.

International students, who are following courses of a duration of at least one academic year in universities and other institutions offering post-secondary education in Mauritius, are authorized to work on a part time basis, except in the field of security, for 20 hours a week, subject to prescribed conditions.

A “Post-Study Work Visa” which allows international students to work in Mauritius after completion of undergraduate studies in sectors where there is scarcity of skills such as ICT, Fintech, AI and Biotechnology, will be introduced soon. Details and further conditions will then be available.

Mauritius has a tropical climate with temperature varying from 15 0C in winter to 34 0C.

After obtaining your visa to study in Mauritius, you can open a bank account locally. There are several banks and branches around the country where you can open an account. ATM services are also widely available in different parts of the island. Additionally, many shops accept electronic money: cards and mobile payments.
